Folk is one of the musical genres that more hits is creating today. In recent years, we have virtually seen an explosion of bands, singers and musical trends that have given a new dimension to this genre, modernizing it and removing that feel of antiqueness and old-fashioned sense that was covering this type of music.
Mumford & Sons is one of those bands that, since 2007, are contributing to change the perception of this genre, focusing especially on people in their thirties (and in this case, with a special dedication to British fans). Their first album, which is titled Sigh No More was released in UK in October 2009 but, in 2010, it became relatively popular in United States and Canada too. In addition, the band was one of the enough acclaimed bands at the FIB Heineken 2010 Festival in Spain.
The debut album of the English band is essentially a compendium of folk songs performed with enough artistry and a great musical style. It combines epic melodies, chores that even come to stifle the main voice, and chaotic instrumental passages. However, some people have criticize this London band with insistence and severity. They have been accused of lack of authenticity, writing extremely basic songs, and having several low quality tracks included in the album. Many critics have rated them low (under 5/10); for example, Pitchfork has rated them with 2.1/10, which is a really low score for any musical band… even if they were an amateur band!
The fact is that Sigh No More is, indeed, a predictable album. They are not inventing absolutely nothing, and some lyrics are -at least- very obvious. However, the whole album is not inconsistent and most songs are nice to hear, even if they are very easy and basic.
Lyrics of “Sigh No More” track
Serve God love me and mend
This is not the end
Lived unbruised we are friends
And I’m sorry
I’m sorry
Sigh no more, no more
One foot in sea, one on shore
My heart was never pure
And you know me
And you know me
And man is a giddy thing
Oh man is a giddy thing
Oh man is a giddy thing
Oh man is a giddy thing
Love it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you,
It will set you free
Be more like the man you were made to be.
There is a design,
An alignment to cry,
Of my heart to see,
The beauty of love as it was made to be (x4)
